Mid Summer Picnic

“Mid-Sommer” (Festival of Saint John the Baptist)

Mid-summer picnics were started in Swedish tradition, as a part of the celebration of Saint John the Baptist. June 24th was selected by the church for this celebration because John was the one who said to his followers about Christ the Lord, “He (Jesus) must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30). Therefore, on June 24th until December 24th, the days get shorter until the birth of Jesus, signifying that John was a messenger, NOT the Messiah. Little by little, the celebration became a church picnic to rival current county fairs and family reunions.

Today, Bethany continues the tradition of celebrating Mid-Sommer with an annual "picnic" serving fried chicken, baked ham, Swedish meatballs and ostakaka. Following the meal, attendees enjoy an evening program of music and uplifting messages. Capping off the celebration, the High School Youth Group serves homemade ice cream.

A  wonderful time of faith and fellowship!

Join us Friday, June 21, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. for the 137th annual Mid-Summer Picnic.
